Auto Film Installation Tips
We recently asked window film dealers to share their best auto film installation tip for a chance to win a Facebook Makeover courtesy of the LLumar film creative team. Our judges chose Brad Baxter of Tint Spectrum for his helpful tip.
"On old car applications where the headliner and side panels are old and dusty, peel the liner off your scrap film to use as a cover over the areas that are deteriorated, that way if your new film application touches the deteriorated areas it will not be contaminated."
While Brad took home the prize, several other dealers deserve an honorable mention for their submissions. Here are some of our favorites (though these tips are not necessarily endorsed by LLumar window film).
"When installing window film on any vehicle, ALWAYS check to see if the window gaskets are removable before you start cutting your tint as this will make the installation twice as easy and the finish product look twice as good." − Mike Wilkins, Precision Tint and Signs, Inc.
"When tinting the tight curved front doors on a Corvette convertible 90's to current, I double cut my patterns on one door for both doors and dry shrink with baby powder. By shrinking the all of the film and not just the fingers, you get a faster job and perfect install. You don't get the creases like you can with wet shrinking - just the finger on this tight curved glass." − Fred Johnson, Tinting by Fred Johnson
"Always treat the customer with the respect that you want them to give you in return. It is not all about the tint, but if you are good at what you do, KEEP DOING IT." − Chris Brooks, Kauff's Tint & Graphics
"Protect your customer's interior door panels by using 3.5 mil plastic sheeting (like painter’s plastic) and tuck it behind inner window gaskets and around door panel edges. It will give you the reassurance that both the door panels and electronics are protected from excessive water intrusion or accidental damage. Since enacting this policy in our store, we have had ZERO claims for water damage or malfunctioning door electronics." − Sid Maharajh, Genesis Window Tinting
"To get a cleaner installation on the Teflon area on the rear window, scrub and clean inside rear window as normal. Install film on inside of window, squeege out your solution. Once completely installed, heat across the outside of the window below the bottom of the Teflon area. From inside the vehicle, pull the film down off of the Teflon area and allow it to hang down. Allow the solution to dry and reinstall film dry onto the Teflon. Use a white hard card wrapped with a scotchbrite pad and a paper towel. Make sure to do vertical strokes and only do small areas 1or 2 inches at a time completely across window." − Michael Simpson, Shades
"It helps if you wear those medical "finger condoms" people use for cuts. They are small latex gloves for each finger that stay clean and wet while keeping finger oils off the film." − Chris Martinez, Naked Eye Window Films LLC
"When installation is complete, make sure the vehicle is cleaner than when it came in." − John Roades, Supertints
"I suggest you go to Pep Boys and purchase the Carrand Brush and Dust Pan combo. The Carrand Brush will sink film under gaskets without pulling up any felt - try it on the back window to relieve the stress of the film. Basically, you install the film, spray the film down, and brush the film down like you would normally squeegee the window. This step will eliminate all stress in the film for a clean and fingerless installation. P.S. You may think the bristles will scratch film but the LLumar scratch resistant coating is the best and will not scratch." − Keith Staudenmayer, Solarworks Glass Tinting
"Use the "California Roll" to remove the liner from film. Roll your film as tight as possible, wet down your film. Using your tongue to separate the liner from the film and pop it. Voila! The liner comes off like a breeze!" − John Moore, Toyota Knoxville
"Take your time and do it right the first time! It will cost you more in the long run to rush a job, just to have it come back and redo your mistake. Clean everything as much as possible and don't lift the film once it touches the glass. This I have found the best result for a clean and long lasting job." − Douglas Schrum, Two Guys Window Tinting

LLumar® Window Tint Review
ProPickup Magazine Editor Loves LLumar CTX “As an automotive magazine editor/writer, I've had the opportunityto use LLumar window tint films on numerous project truck builds over the years. What I like about the CTX windowtint is it doesn't interfere with the use of cellular or any other electronicmedia. That's important for those of us who use our pickups as the "mobileoffice."
It also does a really good job keeping radiant heat at bay. There's nothing better than ton a long road trip in the dead of summer thanhaving the a/c on low and the sun not baking the passengers.” -- Bruce W. Smith, Editor/ProPickup magazine Additionally, ProPickup magazine also featured LLumar window tint intheir post “CoolWindow Tint Install.” For this post, they installed LLumar CTX signal-enabling window tint on their ProjectSuper Crew F-250 and shared the results.
